Street photography is a genre of photography that records everyday life in public places. Featuring candid and un-posed moments of people, it is a form of documentary photography that reveals something about the character and the context of the scene.
This is probably the main reason why I like to travel to places that have a different culture from mine in Canada. Street photography in foreign places shows the people, the cityscape or landscape and even the architecture.
Recently I had a very interesting conversation with a friend. He travels to Third World countries as a volunteer, working with people to build skills and transfer knowledge. He told me about some of the very remarkable photos he’s made of people that he’s encountered in these remote places. As he described these photographs with passion, I envied him the ability to do this kind of photography, but as I explained to  him, this is not possible or practical for me. So instead, I travel to places of different culture, and try to get as close to the ground as possible, like on a bike, or on foot.
There is something that’s thrilling for me about walking around a strange place with my camera in my hand. For me, photography is the reason to travel and travel is the reason for photography.
On our latest European adventure, we spent a few days in the larger cities of Portugal – Lisbon and Porto. Here are some photos that I think give a feel for what it’s like there. [Click on any photo for the slideshow. Please leave comments at the bottom of the page]
