On a recent camping trip to Quebec, we had ice cream. I was surprised to learn that hard ice cream, like Stoney Creek Dairy, when I was a kid, or Kawartha Dairy, is quite rare in Quebec. Yes, these unfortunate Quebecers have to live with soft ice cream, which I find boring. No special flavours, or nuts, or anything. For extra cost, they put a quick fix coating of artificial chocolate or caramel on it, to try to trick you. But once you’re through that cosmetic, you’re back to the mundane.
In this world of quick fixes and superficiality, I think about humanity. How often do you encounter someone with a flashy surface, only to find that when you scratch below, you find the true depthless personality.
I wonder if politicians favour soft ice cream?
And here are a few photos from our trip.

Hi Len:
Not all soft ice cream is created equal! Next time you’re in Burlington try Creme de la Creme Creamery. You might change your mind.

Ok, but I’m a hard sell.

Hi Len
I am totally with you on the ice cream, although we did have a cone in Ottawa that started with soft ice cream, but became very decadent, and messy, with all the toppings. I loved all the pictures, especially the rustic settings. For some reason “The Lost Viillages ” is my favourite.

Josee, Hamilton has the best hard ice cream in the whole world, so why should I go to Montreal. PS. maybe on a camping trip next summer, OK?

Totally agree about soft ice cream. Yuk.
Kawartha Moose Track … the greatest.

I love your philosophical thoughts on the ice cream and human nature… Who would have thought of making such comparison?! It totally works!
Thanks for sharing these beautiful pictures. Another great expedition in your book!

That’s philosophy! Thanks Genevieve.

Yes but… if you leave your hard ice cream out long enough it becomes soft anyway.

You’re right, so don’t do dat!

Do they still sell banana splits? I seem to recall that was our “special” ice cream treat. Will never compete with Kawartha though. Love your observations Len. Keep those photos coming.

Haven’t been to Stoney Creek for a long time so I don’t know about the bananna splits. But I don’t agree with you on the Kawartha, IMO it wouold be a tie. Thanks Mo.

Hi Len,
Thanks for the photos. It is nice to see that you and Chantal are getting out and about. Jean and I went to a friend’s cottage for 4 days near Parry Sound, ON. We don’t travel as much any more but we do have fond memories.

Hi Don,
Great to hear from you. Still a couple of camping trips this season, then we’re off to Greenland and Labrador in September, and we have a 3 week ski trip in BC next March, so yes, we’re getting out and about. I really believe that travel is one of the things that inspires your creativity and imagination, and helps keep you at least thinking young.
